Tips For Introducing Dogs And Cats At Home

Bringing a new cat home to your dog, or vice versa? Rushing introductions can create lifelong fear or tension between them. Slow, careful steps are the secret to a harmonious multi-pet household.

Step 1: Scent swapping before face-to-face meetings Start by exchanging their bedding. Let each animal get used to the other’s smell without seeing one another. This removes the shock of a brand-new stranger right away.

Step 2: Separate spaces first Keep them in separate rooms at the beginning. Use a baby gate or pet barrier so they can see and smell each other safely, with no chance to chase or lunge. Reward calm behaviour with treats for both pets.

Step 3: Short, supervised meetings Once they stay relaxed through the barrier, try brief supervised visits. Keep sessions short — 5 to 10 minutes at first. If either pet gets stressed, separate them and try again later. Never force them to interact.

Step 4: Give each pet their own safe zone Cats must have escape routes! Tall cat trees, wall shelves or quiet high perches let your cat get away from the dog when they want space. Separate feeding stations are also a must; pets should never compete over food.

Be patient. Some pairs take days to settle in, while others need weeks. With time and separate safe spaces, dogs and cats can learn to coexist — and even become cuddle buddies.
